USAA Pet Insurance Review

Our USAA Pet Insurance review takes a comprehensive look at the policies administered through USAA by Embrace Pet Insurance. USAA Pet Insurance is one of several products and services offered by the United Services Automobile Association (USAA). The USAA is an organization that have been providing loans, insurance policies and similar financial products to military personnel and their family since 1922. USAA Pet Insurance is available not just to members in the U.S. but also to members on active duty and who are stationed abroad or deployed.

Although USAA Pet Insurance is supplied to members through the USAA, it is actually offered through Embrace Pet Insurance Agency, LLC. Embrace is a well-known and popular company that has received an A+ rating from AM Best – a rating that represents its superior quality. Embrace is also a member of the North American Pet Health Insurance Association. The advantage of getting your policy through USAA if you are a member is that you have access to additional discounts that someone signing up with Embrace Pet Insurance would not have.

USAA pet insurance offers many benefits to pet owners, but you have to be a member of the military and of USAA in order to purchase their pet insurance. There are many benefits available to clients purchasing their pet insurance.

  • A 15% discount on the cost of full coverage pet insurance
  • A 5% discount for active duty military members
  • A 5% discount on spayed or neutered pets
  • A 10% multiple-pet discount
  • A 5% discount if the annual premium is paid in full discount
  • A 5% discount for predictive testing

All of the discounts can be combined for a maximum discount of 25%.

Of the many things that make USAA pet insurance so popular, its flexibility in coverage options is at the top of the list. Pet owners can choose the amount of coverage they wish to purchase. They can choose an accident-only policy or one that covers both accidents and illness. They can also choose their deductible and reimbursement amounts.

A wellness reward option can also be purchased and added to the basic coverage plan. This component helps to pay for preventive and routine health services such as annual examinations, vaccinations, etc. It also covers routine care like grooming or training, and it has no per-item limitations. USAA Pet Insurance does not cover pre-existing conditions.

Another popular option is the ability of the pet owner to take their pet to any licensed veterinarian in the country (or even the world if deployed) for veterinary services. Pets, dogs in particular, are playing a much larger role in the family unit today, and many families take their dog with them on vacation. The ability to choose any licensed veterinarian anywhere is a very convenient feature.

Here are some of the many things USAA pet insurance does cover.

  • Breed-specific conditions
  • ER visits and ER care
  • Diagnostic imaging and testing
  • Specialist care
  • Cancer treatment
  • Surgery and hospitalization
  • Nursing care
  • Prescription drugs
  • Treatment for both congenital and chronic conditions
  • Behavioral therapy
  • Alternative therapy and rehabilitation

Depending on where you live, there can be a waiting period of 2 to 14 days for accidents and a 14-day waiting period for illnesses before USAA will pay for coverage. Orthopedic issues with dogs include a 6-month waiting period, which can be reduced to 14 days if the client gets an orthopedic examination for the pet and follows a waiver process. All accidents and illnesses, including cancer and breed-specific conditions, will be covered as long as they are not considered pre-existing, and the waiting periods have expired before the issue is diagnosed.

To give an example of the cost for an illness and accident pet insurance policy through this company, we ran a few variables. The monthly premium for a 2-year old, large breed female dog was $18.59, and this was for a policy that had a $1,000 deductible, an annual maximum limit of $10,000 reimbursement and an 80% reimbursement. The cost for the same coverage on a 2-year old, mixed breed male cat was $8.60 per month.

USAA Pet Insurance Plan Cost

The cost of a USAA Pet Insurance policy varies by several factors, including animal, breed, deductible, co-pay and amount and type of coverage. Accident-only policies are cheaper than comprehensive coverage for accident and illness. A basic pet insurance plan can be as low as $9 per month for a cat and $16 per month for a dog. The cost can be even lower for clients who are eligible for some of the many discounts offered by USAA.

Unlike some other pet insurance companies, USAA pet insurance does not offer unlimited coverage. This is probably the biggest drawback of USAA pet insurance, but they recently raised the annual limit to $30,000 – which is extremely rare to reach. What this means is that there will be an annual cap or maximum amount on what USAA will pay on a certain illness or injury. USAA pet insurance is available to pets of all ages, but animals that are 14 years or older are only eligible for accident-only coverage.

Deductibles are the amount that you have to pay on a claim before USAA pet insurance will pay anything. USAA allows you to customize your deductibles from $200 to $1,000. If your pet incurs a medical bill of $5,000 for covered services, and your deductible is $500, you would pay the $500, and USAA would pay $4,500.

In addition to choosing deductibles, pet owners can also choose the annual limits they wish to have on their pet. These options range from $5,000 to $30,000 annually.

Plan Limits

There are no breed restrictions with USAA pet insurance.

A note on pre-existing conditions – some pet insurance companies will not cover any issue that your pet has ever experienced before. USAA/Embrace work a bit differently because they look at pre-existing conditions as curable vs. incurable. An incurable condition would be something like diabetes and allergies. These would be considered pre-existing if you were to switch pet insurance companies or seek care after the issue has arisen. A curable pre-existing condition would be something like an ear infection – if your pet goes issue-free for 12 months, they can be covered for these issues moving forward.

USAA/Embrace will do a complimentary medical history review as long as you have a policy.

Our USAA pet insurance review also looks at claims. For this, we take a look at what the website claims are the timeframes, and we also do an analysis of the various review sites to see what real customers are saying. According to the USAA’s website, claims are completed quickly, with claims being reimbursed approximately five days after submission of all necessary claims. However, some customers have occasionally complained that claim processing was slower than they would have liked and that it required additional documentation. We recommend that you look at claims processing time as an important indicator of your new policy’s success.
