TrustedPals Pet Insurance Review (2022)

We often wish our pets could tell us when they feel happy, sad, scared, or under the weather. This would be especially helpful if they’re sick and need medical attention. A new pet insurance provider, TrustedPals, offers health coverage “for pets, by pets.” A representative speaks directly to your pet to provide a charming user experience while also emphasizing the importance of pet insurance in every pet’s life.

In this TrustedPals Pet Insurance review, we will discuss how TrustedPals outshines its competitors, how it falls short, and much more such as:

  • What TrustedPals pet insurance covers
  • How much plans and add-ons cost
  • What customizations are available
  • What real customers have to say about it

Our Review for TrustedPals Pet Insurance

We like TrustedPals’ customizable pricing system and its preset plan options for pet parents who don’t want to choose their deductibles, annual limits, and reimbursement rates. TrustedPals also pledges 1% of its profits to aid pets affected by natural disasters, so you’ll help homeless pets while caring for your own.

The provider has a 12-month waiting period for orthopedic incidents like hip dysplasia and cruciate ligament injuries, which is six months longer than other popular providers. The TrustedPals website doesn’t currently have an online chat feature, so you’ll have to call or email with questions.

Pros and Cons of TrustedPals Pet Insurance

  • $0 deductible and 100% reimbursement options
  • TrustedSpotter pet ID included with policy purchase

  • No online chat feature
  • Founded in 2019, so less established

TrustedPals Pet Insurance Plans and Coverage

TrustedPals offers an extensive range of coverage despite being a newer provider. TrustedPals offers one comprehensive plan, so you won’t have to worry about choosing add-ons to cover your pet’s needs. TrustedPals offers a Wellness Plan, which is important to pet owners seeking savings on preventative care. Like all pet insurance providers, TrustedPals plans have exclusions, which we’ll discuss later.

Here’s an overview of items covered by TrustedPals:

  • Trips to the vet
  • Treatment at the vet
  • Prescription medications
  • Pet food and supplements
  • Prescribed training and therapy

Plans and Costs

On average, TrustedPals pet insurance costs $40 per month for dogs and $27 per month for cats. These prices will vary depending on your pet’s age, breed, and zip code location. Although TrustedPals won’t limit your pet’s coverage as it ages, your insurance premiums will increase because older pets tend to have more health problems than younger ones.

For example, a 2-year-old dog in Dallas has a $30 monthly premium, and a 14-year-old dog of the same breed and location has a $100 monthly premium. Luckily, TrustedPals offers plan customization options, so you can mix and match rates to fit your budget needs.

TrustedPals offers one comprehensive plan for accident and illness coverage. The plan covers physical exam fees, behavioral therapy, prescription medications, and treatment for hereditary conditions. Your pet’s chronic conditions are covered if they become symptomatic after your policy period starts. The items we listed are only covered if prescribed by a licensed veterinarian in response to an unexpected injury or illness.

Now that you know what’s covered by TrustedPals, you need to know how much this coverage costs.

First, you can opt to pay either monthly or annually. The annual option doesn’t cut any substantial costs, so it’s truly up to your preference. You’ll have to pay a $21 enrollment fee for your first policy. This includes a $9 medical records fee and a $12 administrative fee. A per-pet $1 service fee is added to each of your monthly payments. TrustedPals waives this fee if you select the annual payment option.

TrustedPals offers four different coverage models to help you make the most of your insurance. You can choose between the Budget Friendly, Most Popular, Best Reimbursement, and Custom options when building your pet’s plan.

The Budget Friendly Plan has a $4,000 annual limit, 70% reimbursement rate, and $750 annual deductible.

The Most Popular Plan comes with an $8,000 annual limit, 80% reimbursement rate, and $250 annual deductible.

The Best Reimbursement Plan offers an unlimited annual limit, a 90% reimbursement rate, and a $100 annual deductible.

If none of these options meet your needs, the Custom Plan allows you to combine different copays, deductibles, and maximum benefits.

TrustedPals is one of the only pet health insurance providers to offer $0 deductible and 100% reimbursement rate options. Figo pet insurance is the only other provider to offer a $0 copay.

Deductibles

Your annual deductible is the amount of money you’ll pay on your own before TrustedPals starts covering costs. Luckily, TrustedPals offers several deductible options, allowing you to choose a limit that works best for your wallet and your pet’s veterinary needs. The Custom Plan has deductible options of $0, $100, $250, $500, and $750.

TrustedPals is one of the only insurance providers to offer a $0 deductible option. With no deductible, your coverage kicks in as soon as your waiting periods are over. If you choose the $0 deductible, you’ll pay more in monthly premiums but won’t have to worry about reaching a certain amount before TrustedPals reimburses your claims.

Preventative Care Limits

TrustedPals doesn’t cover preventative care under its accident/illness plan, but it does offer a wellness add-on to cover such items. Instead of establishing price limits for individual preventative care services, TrustedPals provides $750 per year to use however you need. So, if your dog’s teeth cleaning costs $750, you can use your entire wellness care allotment towards that expense.

Based on the idea that you shouldn’t have to prove your pet’s health to receive great coverage, TrustedPals doesn’t require a wellness exam before policy onset. If you want, you can use your $750 allotment towards your pet’s routine exam during your policy period.

With the add-on, TrustedPals provides wellness coverage for:

  • Annual exams
  • Vaccinations
  • Flea/tick preventives
  • Heartworm testing and preventatives
  • Prescribed nutritional supplements
  • Spaying/neutering procedures
  • Dental cleanings
  • Prescription pet foods

Note that wellness services are only covered if prescribed and administered by a licensed veterinary professional. You’ll have to reach your selected pet insurance deductible before you’re able to use your $750 wellness care allotment.

Coverage Exclusions

TrustedPals covers any breed of cat or dog over eight weeks old. Otherwise, coverage isn’t limited by age, but premiums will increase as your pet gets older. Wellness care is excluded from TrustedPals’ accident/illness coverage. Wellness items include routine care services your pet needs every year.

When considering coverage limits, be sure to factor in waiting periods. A waiting period is the amount of time you must wait before coverage kicks in. TrustedPals has a 14-day waiting period for accidents and illnesses and a 12-month waiting period for orthopedic incidents such as hip dysplasia or cruciate ligament injury. If your pet gets sick before your initial 14 days is up, you will have to pay for those vet expenses in full.

Like all pet insurance providers, TrustedPals doesn’t cover certain items at all. Your plan won’t cover any pre-existing conditions your pet was diagnosed with or symptomatic of before your policy started. It also won’t cover any services that a licensed vet didn’t prescribe. For example, if you buy a first aid kit and administer care at home, TrustedPals won’t reimburse you for those supplies.

Other items excluded from TrustedPals coverage include microchipping, boarding, grooming, and pet transport costs.

Plan Customizations

If you aren’t interested in TrustedPals’ preset plans, you can mix and match rates to create a personalized plan. With the Custom Plan, you can combine the following rates for a plan that fits your budget and veterinary needs:

  • Annual limits – $4,000, $8,000, $15,000, unlimited
  • Reimbursement – 70%, 80%, 90%, 100%
  • Annual deductible – $0, $100, $250, $500, $750

You can opt to pay monthly or annually. Paying annually will only save you about three dollars in costs throughout your policy.

We generated the quotes below for a 2-year-old Pug in Denver. Take a look at how different rate combinations affect your monthly premium*:

Discounts

TrustedPals automatically awards a 5% MultiPaw discount at checkout when you enroll more than one pet. The company also offers 5% discounts to active military personnel, veterans, veterinary staff members, veterinary students, and first responders. You’ll also receive a 5% discount if your insured pet is a registered service animal. These discounts aren’t available in some states, so be sure to check your specific policy for any exclusions.

TrustedPals offers a Refer-a-Pal rewards program. This program allows existing policyholders to refer a friend to TrustedPals. After purchasing a plan, you can fill out a referral form in its Pawtal online claims system. TrustedPals will send a referral code to your chosen contacts. When one of your friends buys TrustedPals pet insurance using your unique code, the provider will send you a $25 digital gift card.

TrustedPals Pet Insurance State Availability

TrustedPals pet insurance is available in all 50 states. If any part of your pet insurance policy conflicts with statutes in your state, the state statute will overrule the policy. Discounts for service pets, military personnel, veterans, and first responders are unavailable in New York and Tennessee. The TrustedSpotter program isn’t available in all states.

If you’re unsure if a TrustedPals feature is available in your particular state, read the fine print of your policy or reach out to the customer service team.

TrustedPals Pet Insurance Reviews

TrustedPals is a newer pet insurance provider, so you might feel skeptical about purchasing a policy. Luckily, other people have insured their pets with TrustedPals and commented on their experiences.

For a newer provider, TrustedPals offers customizable coverage on an impressive list of items. Its website isn’t the most user-friendly and has some quirks that need fixing. Quirks aside, the website is tailored to pet parents and has a cute, fun-loving feel.

Don’t just take it from us. Here’s a compilation of positive and negative reviews, so you can see how real customers feel about TrustedPals pet insurance.

“Their injury coverage is AWESOME. It’s truly a great value. Their Wellness policy only covers $750 a year max, so that’s a bummer. For example, a standard pet teeth cleaning is around $2,500, so you might want to get a second insurance policy for anything wellness-related. But for any emergency or illness care, this company is great!” –Rae S., TrustPilot

“TrustedPals is the best pet Insurance company I have ever used. They were reasonably priced and had the best coverage. The claims were easily and quickly resolved. The last person I dealt with, Rachel, was excellent to deal with and was able to help me with any and all concerns. I would recommend TrustedPals for any pet owner. They are the best.” –Alan S., TrustPilot

“My dog is a service dog, so his health and safety is very important to me and, consequently, having good insurance for him is a must. I signed up for a TrustedPals policy without a cap, so I don’t have to worry about vet costs. Sure, I still have to pay 10%, but I can deal with that if it means keeping my dog alive and well. Thankfully I haven’t had to file a claim yet, but I feel confident that TrustedPals is there when I need them. They keep in touch via newsletters so I always know they are around and they still have my dog’s back.” –Peter G., TrustPilot

“Submitting claims is pretty straightforward on the website. I submit the invoices as soon as I get them (usually the same day of service), but they always request a copy of the Medical Record. It would be more efficient if I could upload that at the same time as the invoice. It usually takes a couple of days for TrustedPals to request the Medical Records, though I have learned to have it scanned and ready when the request comes through.” –Don S., TrustPilot

Final Thoughts

We hope this TrustedPals pet insurance review gives you insight into a new player in the pet insurance world. Despite its novelty, TrustedPals offers great coverage on your pet’s unexpected vet costs, with customer reviews to back it up.

We like TrustedPals’ streamlined claims process and impressive deductible and annual limit options. It’s a good option for older animals, as age doesn’t limit coverage. On-the-go pet parents can use the TrustedPals app to submit claims or review policy information. While we do wish TrustedPals had an online chat feature for customers who need speedy assistance, we understand the provider is new and doesn’t offer this feature yet.

TrustedPals is a good option for dog and cat owners needing a simple, comprehensive plan with a wellness add-on. Regardless of who you trust with your pet’s coverage, you’ll be better equipped to face unexpected visits to the vet.

TrustedPals Pet Insurance vs. Competitors

When buying pet insurance, it’s crucial to consider the wide variety of options on the market. Different providers offer different coverage options, pricing, add-ons, and customizability, so you need to find the perfect option for you and your pet’s health. TrustedPals is comparable to other options but does have a couple of factors – like its lack of online chat support and 12-month orthopedic waiting periods – that set it back.

Take a look at how TrustedPals compares to some other big names in the pet insurance industry.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the advantages of TrustedPal’s pet insurance?

TrustedPals has a few features that set it apart from competitors. First, it’s one of the only pet insurance companies to offer a $0 deductible and a 0% copay. Although you can’t combine these features on the same plan, each rate provides a high level of customizability to help you build a cost-effective, personalized plan.

TrustedPals claims to work for the well-being of pets and sticks to that mission by donating 1% of profits to help animals affected by natural disasters. TrustedPals also developed its exclusive TrustedSpotter program, which provides a free ID tag to all insured pets.

How do I file a claim with TrustedPals?

To file a claim with TrustedPals, submit an itemized copy of your pet’s vet bill in your Pawtal. A claims agent may need your pet’s medical records to complete your claim. The agent will contact your vet directly for the documentation or prompt you to submit the documents via email. Once you’ve submitted your claim, TrustedPals should reimburse you in 10 business days or less.

If you are making claims for more than one pet, remember to have the vet split each pet’s costs onto separate invoices. You’ll submit individual claims for each pet.

Does TrustedPals offer exotic pet insurance?

At this time, TrustedPals only provides pet insurance for dogs and cats. Birds and other exotic animals aren’t covered under any TrustedPals plan.

What is the TrustedSpotter?

The TrustedSpotter program is an exclusive TrustedPals Pet Insurance feature. The program is designed to help pet owners locate lost pets and help other people report found pets

With every pet you insure through TrustedPals, you’ll receive a free TrustedSpotter tag to attach to your pet’s collar. The tag is marked with a unique code that only your pet has. If your pet gets lost, people can use the code to report the found animal. TrustedPals will notify you when your animal is found so that you can bring your beloved pet back home.

What if my pet dies during my policy period?

If your pet passes away during your policy period, TrustedPals will cancel your policy within 60 days and refund any unearned premiums. TrustedPals will reimburse your vet for expenses incurred in euthanizing your pet and will pay up to $250 for cremation and burial expenses.

TrustedPals will pay you a death benefit of $150 if you don’t know how much you originally paid for your pet. If you can prove how much you paid for your pet, TrustedPals will pay you a death benefit of up to $1,000. Read your policy’s fine print for death benefit exclusions.

How do I know which plan to choose?

If you’re unsure which plan is best for you, consider what you’ll think about when that unexpected, costly vet visit comes around. If you’ll want more money back after the visit, a low deductible/high reimbursement plan might be the best option. The higher monthly premiums will be worth it when you meet your deductible faster and have higher payouts. If you’d rather have lower monthly costs and pay more out of pocket in the event of an emergency, consider a high deductible/low reimbursement plan. Either way, TrustedPals gives you the power to fit your plan to your priorities.
