Prudent Pet Insurance Review
About Prudent Pet Insurance
Prudent Pet is a newer player to the pet insurance market, but they are underwritten by Crum and Forster Pet Insurance Agency, attaching them to one of the oldest pet insurance companies in the game. Other brands underwritten by C&F include Hartville, ASPCA and PetPremium, if you are looking for a little more history in how claims may be paid out when making your decision.

All plans have limits, and it is important to see what the limits are for any particular policy you are looking at. For Prudent Pet, their limits are annual limits, and the options are: $2,500, $5,000, $10,000, $15,000, $20,000 or unlimited. Once you are at the point of getting a quote, you can play around with the different options ot see what your monthly payment will be. The higher your limit, the more your monthly payment. However, you don’t want to go too low because you could get stuck with a bill if your pet encounters something serious.
Prudent Pet has three different deductibles: $100, $250 and $500. If you are looking for a lower monthly payment, choose a higher deductible. If you are looking for the least amount out of pocket if your pet does get sick or hurt, you will need a lower deductible.
Pet insurance works off a reimbursement model, and Prudent Pet is no different. The great thing about Prudent Pet is that you can use it at any vet in the U.S. because they will reimburse you based on your reimbursement amount and if they decide the services are covered or not – they do not pay directly to your vet.
Prudent Pet works off the industry standard, and offers 70%, 80% and 90% reimbursement options.
You can get reimbursed quickly through check or direct deposit, submit your vet bill and all other documents online through the policy portal and follow up with your claim online.
Other cool stuff
Prudent Pet has a multi-pet discount
Preventive and wellness care is an add-on, but at least it is an option, whereas some companies don’t offer this. They have two options: A Basic plan with seven preventive benefits ($250 of annual coverage) or a Prime option with 12 preventive benefits ($450 in annual coverage). The covered items include dental cleanings, spay/neuter, deworming, health certificate, vaccines, urinalysis, fecal tests and more.
It is important to note that with preventive care coverage, the pet companies cover ‘up to’ a certain amount, and wellness care does not apply to your deductible. This means that in the case of Prudent Pet, a dental cleaning is covered up to $150. So, if a cleaning at your vet is actually $200, then you are responsible for the other $50, plus your monthly contribution to wellness care.
Our overall review:
Overall, Prudent Pet seems like a solid addition to the pet insurance market, and with strong backing from C&F, they have the financial means to cover claims for all claims, as long as you read the fine print and don’t try to get claims covered for things that can be deemed pre-existing. Time will tell if they are really a disruptor in the pet insurance marketplace!
