Liberty Mutual Pet Insurance Review

About Liberty Mutual Pet Insurance

Liberty Mutual Insurance Company is an insurance company that offers a variety of insurance policies including homeowners, property, auto, health and pet insurance. Their pet insurance is particularly popular with both cat and dog owners. Their policies are underwritten by United States Fire Insurance Company and are affiliated with Hartville Pet Insurance. Their policies are offered with a 30-day money back guarantee.

Liberty Mutual Pet Insurance is popular with pet owners because of the many options it offers. Pet owners can choose from different deductibles and reimbursement amounts. They also offer different types of pet insurance policies, including accident-only policies and complete coverage (wellness) policies. Like most pet insurance companies, Liberty Mutual Pet Insurance will not pay for pre-existing conditions, cosmetic procedures and breeding costs.

Coverage

The pet insurance offered by Liberty Mutual offers some of the best coverages when compared to many other pet insurance companies. An average policy for a dog is around $48 per month while a pet policy for cats can average about $19 per month.

The Complete Coverage policy covers both accidents and illnesses and offers the widest range of treatment and test coverages. Coverages in this plan include:

  • All types of surgery
  • Eye issues
  • Diagnostic testing
  • Hospitalization
  • Microchipping
  • Digestive issues
  • Examination fees
  • Prescription medication and prescription food
  • Hypothyroidism
  • Cancer treatment
  • Knee injuries and ligament issues

Liberty Mutual offers two different wellness plans, both of which pay the maximum reimbursement amount annually. Preventative care can be added to your wellness plans for a small amount more.

When you purchase this coverage, the insurance company will provide you with a certain amount of money that will pay for certain preventative services, such as vaccines, dental cleaning and wellness exams. Both wellness plans include:

  • Neutering or spaying
  • Routine exams
  • Dental cleaning
  • Preventative care services

Addition parts of the Complete Coverage package include:

Hereditary and Congenital Conditions

This plan covers any hereditary or congenital conditions that are not pre-existing conditions. Hip dysplasia is covered within 14 days of diagnosis.

Alternative Therapy

This covers therapies such as aqua, hydrotherapy, physiotherapy and all rehab therapies.

Behavioral Issues

This portion of the complete coverage policy covers issues like fur pulling, tail chasing, destructive chewing and excessive licking.

Chronic Conditions

Provided they’re not pre-existing conditions, this portion covers conditions or illnesses that require continual treatment like skin allergies, hay fever, diabetes and various eye conditions.

Accident-only policies will only cover accident-related tests and treatments. Although the least expensive, this policy will not cover illness. Accident-only policies cover these types of things.

  • Bite wounds
  • Broken bones
  • Toxic ingestions
  • Cuts
  • Lodged foreign objects
  • Abscesses

There are certain conditions, limitations or waiting periods on the policy depending on the coverage and the medical condition requiring care.

To give you a general idea on the cost of a Complete Coverage package, the premium for a 5-year old male Collie is $37.50 per month. This policy has a $5,000 annual limit, a $250 deductible and an 80% reimbursement rate. Changing the policy to an unlimited annual limit increases the policy to $57.58 per month.

The premium for a 3-year old female Siamese cat is $18.31 per month. This policy also has a $5,000 annual limit, a $250 deductible and an 80% reimbursement rate. Changing the policy to an unlimited annual limit increases the policy to $27.80 per month.

Limits

The benefit limit amounts are the maximum reimbursements the insurance company will pay each year on a policy. Liberty Mutual Pet Insurance allows you to choose from $5,000 to unlimited. Pet owners usually choose the amount they need based on their dog or cats’ needs. The amount can be changed each year. Obviously, the unlimited benefit level is the costliest. With the wellness policies, there are specific limits on what the company will pay on certain services or treatments.

Deductibles

Every pet insurance policy includes a deductible, which is the amount you have to pay each year before the insurance will pay on a covered claim. Liberty Mutual Pet Insurance offers you the choice of a $100, $250 and $500 deductible. If you choose the $250 deductible, this is the amount you would have to pay each year before. The lower the deductible you choose, the higher your premium will be.

Claims & Reimbursements

Reimbursements are paid after you have already paid the bill and the deductible. You may the vet directly and submit the bill to the insurance company for reimbursement of your share. You can choose from three different reimbursement amounts: 70%, 80% or 90%. The lower the reimbursement amount you choose, the lower your premium. Reimbursement is made based on the amount on the actual vet bill. Here is an example of how a reimbursement would work.

You have a wellness policy with a $500 deductible and an 80% reimbursement amount. On a $3,000 bill for covered expenses, you would end up paying a total of $1,000. You would first pay the $500 deductible, which leaves $2,500 on the bill. The insurance company would pay $2,000 ($2,500 x 80%), and you would pay the remaining $500.

Method and/or the amount of reimbursement is based on the type of policy. Reimbursements are available at four levels. All four-level reimbursements are based on normal and customary covered costs. Complete Coverage reimbursement is based on the actual invoice while Preventative and Wellness Care reimbursements are based on a schedule.
