Lemonade vs. Trupanion

Both Lemonade and Trupanion only offer one accident and illness base plan with optional add-on features available for enhanced coverage, but their policy details certainly aren’t the same.

For instance, Trupanion doesn’t cover any preventative care items. Still, it does include behavioral therapy coverage as an optional add-on. In contrast, Lemonade has three different levels of routine care available for its customers but won’t cover any expenses related to common behavioral issues.

In this Lemonade vs. Trupanion review, we’ll isolate the key coverage differences between these two pet insurance providers based on:

  • Overall rank
  • Average monthly premiums for cats and dogs
  • Annual payout limits, deductibles, and reimbursements

Lemonade Coverage Overview

Based in New York, Lemonade is the only completely digital provider in the pet insurance industry, distributing customizable accident and illness coverage directly out of its easy-to-use mobile app or desktop portal.

Unlike its competitors, Lemonade uses innovative AI technology to provide fast customer service, a seamless enrollment experience, and an estimated 90-second claim submission process. Additionally, by automating its underwriting operations, Lemonade can cut down on company costs, allowing it to market some of the lowest monthly premiums industry-wide.

Despite only offering one base plan, a pet owner who enrolls with Lemonade can still personalize their policy to fit their preferred premium and coverage expectation by choosing from the following options:

  • Annual coverage limit — $5,000, $10,000, $20,000, $50,000, or $100,000
  • Annual deductible — $100, $250, or $500
  • Reimbursement rate — 70, 80, or 90%

Lemonade won’t keep you waiting for accident coverage with its two-day waiting period for eligible injuries, but if your pet suddenly comes down with a mystery illness, you won’t be able to file a claim unless two weeks have passed since your policy activation.

Any orthopedic conditions like hip dysplasia or cruciate ligament injuries won’t be covered until you’ve been enrolled for at least six months. Trupanion will cover orthopedic injuries just five days after enrollment and illnesses after one month.

What Does Lemonade Cover?

Even by enrolling in just a base plan alone, Lemonade policyholders are insured for a wide range of accidents, illnesses, hereditary conditions, and chronic conditions.

Covered emergency vet services related to approved conditions include:

  • Diagnostics —  blood tests, lab work, and urinalysis
  • Medical imaging — X-rays, ultrasounds, CT scans, and MRIs
  • Emergency care, surgery, and hospitalization
  • Outpatient and specialty care
  • Prescription medications
  • Injections

For more robust coverage, a Lemonade customer can opt to add preventative care coverage to their pet insurance plan by choosing one of Lemonade’s two adult wellness plans or its package designed specifically for puppies and kittens.

These routine care riders will cover you for annual wellness exams, fecal exams, heartworm tests, routine vaccines, and a member’s only medical advice chat line. Lemonade will also cover pets under the age of 2 for microchipping and spay/neuter under the designated Puppy/Kitten Preventative package.

What Does Lemonade Not Cover?

Lemonade excludes medical expenses related to the following:

  • Pre-existing conditions
  • Dental illness care
  • Illnesses or injuries arising from intentional abuse or gross negligence
  • Cosmetic procedures – grooming, nail trims, anal gland expression, etc.
  • Internal and external parasite prevention
  • Prescription food
  • Behavioral therapy or obedience training
  • Breeding and pregnancy-related care
  • Cremation and burial
  • Wellness coverage (unless add-on is purchased)
  • Spaying/neutering (unless add-on is purchased)
  • Microchipping (unless add-on is purchased)

Lemonade is only available in 36 select states and Washington, D.C. In contrast, Trupanion offers pet health insurance nationwide as well as in Canada and Puerto Rico.

How Much Does Lemonade Cost?

A standard Lemonade plan for cats and dogs starts as low as $10 per month, but premiums will vary based on your pet’s age, breed, geographic location, and how you customize your policy.

On average, dog owners who enroll in Lemonde pet insurance pay around $37 per month, whereas cat owners pay closer to $15.

No matter what provider you use, older pets and breeds with prominent congenital conditions typically incur a more expensive monthly premium as they present a higher risk for insurers based on their increased likelihood of needing medical coverage.

Discounts Available

Trupanion Coverage Overview

Like Lemonade, Trupanion distributes its standard pet insurance coverage under one freestanding accident and illness policy. The significant differences between Trupanion and Lemonade lay within their coverage options.

Whereas Lemonade offers a maximum of $100,000 in annual coverage benefits, Trupanion doesn’t cap its coverage. Most pet insurance companies, including Lemonade, instate annual deductibles that renew at the start of each policy period. Trupanion uses lifetime per-condition deductibles, meaning once you pay off your deductible for a specific condition that affects your pet, you’ll never have to pay it again should that condition reoccur.

Offering per-condition deductible choices between $0 and $1,000, Trupanion is one of the few pet health insurance providers with a no-deductible option. By opting out of paying a deductible, a Trupanion policyholder will have immediate access to their coverage benefits in the event of an emergency trip to the vet. Still, their monthly premium may be considerably more expensive by default.

Trupanion customers in Florida only have access to a fixed zero-deductible policy. Floridians can choose a reimbursement rate between 50 and 90%, whereas all other states are subject to a preset 90% coverage rate.

Trupanion offers two payment methods for paying off emergency vet expenses — via traditional reimbursement or direct vet payment. For anyone who might not have enough money to cover a costly upfront payment in the ER room, Trupanion will step in and compensate the veterinarian in minutes, so long as the clinic accepts direct forms of payment and submits a claim with Trupanion at checkout.

What Does Trupanion Cover?

Trupanion’s standard pet insurance covers a variety of medical expenses related to approved conditions, including:

  • Treatment for injuries and illnesses
  • Breed-specific and congenital conditions
  • Diagnostics
  • Emergency care
  • Hospitalizations
  • Surgery
  • Veterinarian-recommended supplements and herbal therapy (not for preventative purposes)
  • Prescription pet food (only up to 50% of the cost and for two months worth of food)
  • Prosthetic devices and carts

Trupanion offers a few different extra coverage riders for pet owners looking to maximize the breadth of their policies:

    1. Recovery and complementary care rider  includes acupuncture, behavioral modification and therapy, chiropractic care, hydrotherapy, homeopathy, naturopathy, and rehabilitative therapy
    2. Pet owner assistance rider  includes liability coverage for third-party property damage, advertising and rewards for lost pets, boarding and kenneling fees, vacation cost reimbursement if you have to cancel a trip to stay home with a sick pet, and cremation or burial fee coverage
    3. Breeding rider covers illnesses or injuries related to breeding, whelping, and queening

    What Does Trupanion Not Cover?

Because wellness care isn’t an unexpected expense but rather something all pet parents should be providing for their animals regardless of whether they have pet insurance or not, Trupanion doesn’t cover any preventative services. These services include annual checkups, vaccines, parasite prevention, heartworm tests, routine blood work, dental cleaning, etc.

Trupanion also won’t cover incurred veterinary expenses related to:

    • Pre-existing conditions
    • Exam fees
    • Office visit/administrative fees
    • Illnesses or injuries that arise from reckless endangerment
    • Breeding, whelping, or queening (an independent rider for breeders is available)
    • Elective cosmetic procedures such as tail docking, ear cropping, declawing, etc.
    • Microchipping
    • Boarding and kenneling
    • Anal gland expression
    • Dental prophylaxis
    • Non-medical pet care items such as bedding, crates, non-prescribed specialty diets like raw food, grooming supplies, electronic wearables, etc.
    • Spaying or neutering
    • Diagnostics and treatment for parasitic infestations
    • Cremation, burial, or funeral costs

Like Lemonade, Trupanion also has age limits on enrollment eligibility for older pets. Only cats and dogs under 14 years of age can enroll in standard pet health insurance through Trupanion.

    How Much Does Trupanion Cost?

Accident and illness coverage through Trupanion can cost an average of $70 per month for dogs and $40 for cats. Though your monthly premium will depend on your pet’s species, age, breed, and geographic location, estimates vary drastically based on how you customize your coverage.

Selecting Trupanion’s zero-deductible plan variation seemed to cost roughly $40 to $50 more than a policy with the second-lowest deductible option of $200.

Adding extra coverage to a standard plan creates a slightly more expensive premium as well. We found that the Complementary Rider costs between $3 to $5 for cats and $7 to $9 for dogs. For Pet Owner Assistance coverage, you’ll pay an additional $4.95 per month.

    Discounts Available

Trupanion currently only offers an unspecified discount to customers* with an assistance animal or therapy pet. This discount only applies to policyholders with registered service animals but not emotional support pets. *Offer not valid in the state of Washington

    Why Choose Lemonade?

It seems that the vast majority of Lemonade’s current customer base is satisfied with the provider’s expeditious claim processing times and convenient plan management features. Yet, while some customers find the AI-powered customer service valuable, others struggle with finding resolutions through chatbots for more complex inquiries about their policy.

Lemonade continues to impress. I have an 11-year-old senior dog, and most companies wouldn’t offer any kind of coverage. Lemonade accepted him right away, and has been excellent to work with. We’ve had numerous claims for routine services and illnesses/accidents, including covering 90% of a $7K knee surgery bill! The claims process is very easy, the service is fast and personable, and they’ve never failed to approve all claims (as long as they weren’t attributed to pre-existing conditions)…” —Fredrik A., Trustpilot

“I am currently in the process of trying to see if I could file a claim for some damage, but the app experience to file is not convenient or flexible enough for my case. Tried contacting Lemonade through various channels, their main phone line is a dead-end, simply no response/dead air after an initial message, tried contacting via chat, no real person, only an AI bot…” —Thomas K., Trustpilot

    Why Choose Trupanion?

Trupanion’s direct vet payment option is undoubtedly a hallmark of its coverage and appears popular among current policyholders. Pet owners slammed with sky-high emergency vet bills that they can’t afford out-of-pocket can opt to have their veterinarians compensated directly through Trupanion.

In terms of drawbacks, while Trupanion is upfront about its lack of routine care coverage, we noticed a handful of complaints expressing confusion around how wellness exclusions intersect with standard coverage.

“Recently, we had to submit a claim for our sweet fur baby Mona. Our vet was able to submit the invoice while we were in the office, and it was preapproved before we left the office. I found this extremely efficient, which decreased our anxiety regarding the financial cost of the vet visit. Overall our experience with Trupanion has been a positive one.” —Bonita D., Trustpilot

“There are too many excluded items. I expected a deductible and copay, but they also don’t pay taxes, an additional 13% in my jurisdiction. And their exclusion of examination fees isn’t just about wellness exams. When my dog was diagnosed with cancer, they refused to pay for the consultation with an oncologist and even the fee for the surgeon.” —Bryan P., Trustpilot
