About Felix Cat Insurance

AM Best Rating: A- and Stable

Felix Cat Insurance, which is a part of Independence American Insurance Company, provides cat owners with just the right amount of health insurance to ensure they can give their feline friends the veterinary care they need to live long healthy lives. They offer different plans so owners can choose the exact amount and type of cat insurance their cat needs and that they can afford.

After reading this Felix Cat Insurance review, you’ll see why so many cat owners choose Felix Cat Insurance. When we think of pet insurance, we typically think of dogs. However, Felix realizes that the best way to ensure they do have nine lives is by keeping them healthy, which often requires cat insurance.

We gave Felix cat insurance an ‘average’ rating. They are newer to the market and it is unknown if their claims are going to go up over time. Their underwriter does have a good rating so far with A.M Best, so that is a good sign, but there are some things that we don’t like, such as the upper age limit of 9 years old for illness coverage, since many of our feline friends now live well into their teens.

Felix Cat Insurance Review – Coverage

Felix insurance offers a couple of different coverage options. They offer Cat Essentials, Cat Plus, and Cat Fancy. The difference between these three options is the deductible, annual payout, and reimbursement rate. Cat owners interested in enrolling in a Felix policy will generally find a Felix cat insurance review helpful, to look at the different options and payout possibilities with this plan.

Here are a few sample policies to give you an idea of what some policies would cost based on the cat’s breed, sex age, and coverage amounts.

Three-year-old mixed breed coverage

For a policy on a three-year-old male mixed breed cat, the premium would be $18.21 for a policy that has a $5,000 annual benefit, $250 deductible, and an 80 percent reimbursement amount. This same policy with a $10,000 annual benefit, $100 deductible, and a 90 percent reimbursement amount would cost $26.57. Cat owners on a budget can choose a policy with a $2,500 annual benefit, $500 deductible, and a 70 percent reimbursement amount for $11.36.

Five-year-old Siamese coverage

For a policy on a five-year-old female Siamese cat, the premium would be $27.43 for a policy that has a $5,000 annual benefit, $250 deductible, and an 80 percent reimbursement amount. This same policy with a $10,000 annual benefit, $100 deductible, and a 90 percent reimbursement amount would cost $41.58. A more economical policy with a $2,500 annual benefit, $500 deductible, and a 70 percent reimbursement would cost $15.85.

Felix is very popular with cat owners because of the various coverage amounts they offer. Too many cats today are euthanized because their owners can’t afford high veterinary costs due to an unexpected illness or accident. Felix insurance will always have your back and help you keep your cat or cats healthy.

Felix offers three different types of policies.

  • Accident and Illness – This comprehensive policy covers most illness and accident services.
  • Accident Only – This policy only covers services caused by an accident. This is often the coverage offered to elderly cats.
  • Wellness – This coverage covers wellness checkups, exams and preventative care. Wellness coverage is typically purchased as an add-on to the accident and illness policy.

Felix accident and illness policies are available to any cat over ten weeks old and under nine years of age. As will all insurance companies, there are certain exclusions or things the insurance company will not pay for. Cats older than nine can be covered under the accident-only policy but are not eligible for illness coverage.

All pet insurance companies have waiting periods that the animal must go through before a claim will be paid. Felix cat insurance has the following waiting periods:

Illnesses 14 days
Accidents 2 days
Behavioral problems or alternative therapies 180 days
Intervertebral disc disease or cruciate ligament injuries 180 days

Felix’s feline insurance does not cover pre-existing conditions. Your cat is covered on the policy regardless of where he or she may be as long as it’s in the United States.

As with all cat insurance policies, Felix offers you the choice of deductibles ranging from $100 to $500. The lower deductible you choose, the less you will have to pay but the higher the premium will be. The deductible is the amount the owner must pay before the insurance company will pay.

If you choose a policy with a $100 deductible, and the bill is $1,000, you will pay $100, and the insurance company would pay the remaining $900. However, there is also a reimbursement rate that must be paid.

On this same policy with a 90 percent reimbursement rate, the insurance company will pay 90 percent of the $900 and the cat owner would pay ten percent of the $900, minus the $100 deductible.

The claim process at Felix is relatively simple and straightforward. You have the choice of uploading the vet’s bill to the Felix insurance page and submitting the claim form or downloading the claim reimbursement form, filling it out, and mailing it along with the original bill to our company.

Once the company receives the bill and claim form, cat owners can expect to be reimbursed in three to four days. You can choose to have it deposited into your bank account or receive a check in the mail.
