AAA Pet Insurance Plans and Coverage

In this section, we’ll go over the different plan options and prices available through Embrace. Embrace offers customizable reimbursement, deductible, and annual limit options that you can mix and match to build your ideal monthly rate. We’ll explain what incidents are covered under an Embrace pet insurance plan and provide samples of prices you might encounter. We’ve generated quotes using the provider’s most popular reimbursement and deductible rates to give you a better idea of AAA’s pet insurance costs.

Plans and Costs

Embrace doesn’t have any add-on options apart from its Wellness Rewards package. Instead, it includes additional services automatically under its base plan. Embrace offers reimbursement for complementary treatments, specialist care, diagnostic testing, and prescription medications for any covered conditions.

Under its accident and illness plan, AAA’s pet insurance through Embrace covers:

  • Accidents and illnesses
  • Diagnostic testing and exam fees
  • Breed-specific and hereditary conditions
  • Chronic conditions
  • Emergency and specialist fees
  • Cancer and diagnostic treatment
  • Hospitalization and surgery
  • Behavioral therapy
  • Alternative treatment and rehabilitation
  • Prescription medications
  • Preventable conditions
  • Dental illnesses

The accident and illness plan is available for dogs and cats in all 50 states. Embrace provides average monthly prices for a few different breeds and ages. According to its website, you’ll typically pay between $35-$45 for dog insurance and $20-$25 for cat insurance. Monthly plan costs vary depending on your zip code and your pet’s species, breed, age, and health status.

Wellness care is excluded from Embrace’s pet insurance coverage. Wellness care includes services you can expect to pay for by default each year. Think routine checkups, teeth cleanings, blood work, vaccinations, and flea and tick prevention. You can purchase Embrace’s Wellness Rewards package for up to $650 in wellness reimbursements to cover these items. This program isn’t part of your pet insurance policy but instead functions as a budgeting tool for preventative pet care. It’s the only supplemental plan available through Embrace.

Deductibles

Embrace offers deductible rates of $200, $300, $500, $750, $1,000. The $500 option is the most popular amongst policyholders.

If you choose the highest deductible, you’ll have lower monthly premiums but a higher amount to reach before Embrace starts covering your pet’s vet expenses. You might benefit from a higher deductible plan if your pet is healthy and rarely has expensive vet bills. In this case, you would save more month to month but pay more out of pocket if a costly vet bill comes your way.

AAA members who buy pet insurance through Embrace automatically join the Healthy Pet Deductible program. With the Healthy Pet Deductible, your annual deductible automatically goes down $50 for every year you don’t submit an insurance claim.

If you go two years with no claim reimbursement, you’ll have earned $100 in deductible credits. The $100 credit will apply to the deductible for that policy period if you do eventually have a claim. Your deductible will reset to your original limit for the next policy period.

The Healthy Pet Deductible allows your deductible to reach zero dollars. Embrace is currently the only pet insurance provider to offer a diminishing deductible system.

Preventative Care Limits

AAA’s pet insurance through Embrace has a Wellness Rewards program for preventative care costs. The program allows you to choose between annual reimbursement rates of $250, $450, and $650 to cover routine care costs.

Instead of having dollar amount limits in place for individual services, Embrace gives you a larger yearly allowance to spend however you choose. If you select the $250 rate and spend that much on a single service, you have used your allotted yearly amount and will have to pay for other routine services out of pocket.

Embrace recommends the $650 rate for puppy and kitten owners who will inevitably spend more on initial vaccines and checkups. Pet owners with older pets who just need parasite prevention and routine vaccinations could opt for the lower plan. You can change your Wellness Rewards amount at the start of new policy periods, so you aren’t stuck with a rate that doesn’t fit your needs.

Reimbursable items under Embrace’s Wellness Rewards package include:

  • Wellness exam fees
  • Vaccinations
  • Parasite preventatives
  • Spay/neuter surgeries
  • Routine fecal and blood tests
  • Grooming
  • Nail trimming
  • Teeth cleaning
  • Prescription diet food

The wellness package also offers reimbursement on items like microchipping, pet activity monitors, chiropractic work, training, and more. Be sure to read your policy’s fine print to check for possible loopholes in wellness coverage.

Coverage Exclusions

Like all pet insurance providers, Embrace has some coverage exclusions. Luckily, its exclusions are comparable to those seen across the market, so you aren’t losing important coverage with an Embrace plan.

Along with its competitors, Embrace doesn’t cover pre-existing conditions. These are conditions your pet was symptomatic of before the onset of your pet insurance policy. Embrace does, however, only review the last year of your pet’s medical history when determining pre-existing conditions, so illnesses occurring before those 12 months may qualify for coverage. Embrace also covers curable pre-existing conditions your pet hasn’t been treated for or symptomatic of in 12 months.

Embrace excludes elective cosmetic procedures from coverage, too. Cosmetic procedures, such as tail docking, ear cropping, declawing, and dewclaw removal, are excluded from coverage unless deemed medically necessary by a licensed veterinarian.

Other coverage exclusions include costs resulting from or associated with:

  • Breeding, whelping, and pregnancy
  • Injury or illness from cruelty or neglect
  • Pre-existing behavioral problems
  • Non-diagnostic genetic testing
  • Nutritional counseling
  • Pet boarding
  • Avian flu or nuclear war

Plan Customizations

You can choose any combination of the following yearly rates when building your Embrace pet insurance plan:

  • Annual limits – $5,000; $8,000; $10,000; $15,000; $30,000
  • Deductibles – $200, $300, $500, $750, $1,000
  • Reimbursement rates – 70%, 80%, 90%

Different combinations will change your monthly premium cost, allowing you to choose a plan that best fits your financial and veterinary needs. If you choose a higher reimbursement rate, your payout will be larger for each claim, but you’ll pay more in monthly premiums. Embrace doesn’t offer an unlimited annual limit option, so your yearly coverage will be capped at a maximum of $30,000.

Take a look at how different plan customizations can affect your monthly premium price. Remember, prices depend on location, species, breed, and age, so your pet insurance plan prices will vary. We generated these sample quotes for a 2-year-old German Shepherd in Phoenix.

AAA Pet Insurance Reviews

There’s no better way to vet a company than to hear the opinions of other users. We’ve compiled some reviews – both good and bad – from real Embrace pet insurance policyholders.

Customers generally seem pleased with the claims submission process, noting prompt reimbursement and a simple system for uploading documents. Other customers praised the individual customer service representatives for their empathetic attention to pets’ individual needs. Some policyholders were disgruntled over yearly increases in premiums. Embrace agents responded to these negative reviews, saying that all pet insurance companies are raising prices in response to rising veterinary care costs.

“The entire process was seamless and easy. The application to upload receipts, the areas for descriptions, and the very little time it took to submit a reimbursement claim were appreciated. I would recommend Embrace for any pet parent’s needs. Well done.” –April W., TrustPilot

“Having Embrace was the best decision we could have ever made! Because of them, we can now focus on our dog healing and walking again. There were no issues or delays either. The process was simple, uncomplicated and I received a refund check within two weeks. I’ve had Embrace for many years, and I have never encountered an issue. I highly recommend them.” –M. Clark, TrustPilot

“GREAT service. Prompt response, excellent coverage. Straightforward and easy to use. With a Labrador who is very active and curious, the insurance was well worth it as she grew up. Now that she has been diagnosed with Addison’s disease at age 5, she will need meds for the rest of her life, and we are doubly glad we have Embrace.” –Elise G., TrustPilot

“I’ve been pleased with the coverage so far, but am really not a fan of how much it increases in price every single year. I’m not sure that just putting this money in a savings account wouldn’t have been a wiser way to go. I really didn’t expect such increases in price.” –Vicki M., TrustPilot

About AAA Pet Insurance

The American Automobile Association was founded in Chicago in 1902 on the heels of automobile invention. Vehicle enthusiasts began joining together to celebrate new automobile technologies and respond to the growing need for better highways and road maps. The enthusiasts established motor clubs, joining together and eventually forming the American Automobile Association.

The organization published various maps and guides for drivers and eventually established a roadside assistance program. Over a century later, AAA has become America’s biggest name in roadside assistance, responding to nearly 30 million calls per year.

Over time, AAA added several services to its catalog, including travel assistance, financial planning, banking, and insurance administration. AAA now offers car insurance, homeowners’ insurance, life insurance, renters’ insurance, flood insurance, boat insurance, motorcycle insurance, health insurance, business insurance, travel insurance, and pet insurance. Today, AAA has over 61 million members, 32 motor clubs, and 1,000 offices across the nation.

AAA has partnered with several pet insurance agencies to provide members with savings and coverage, no matter where they are. These partners include some of the top names in pet insurance, including Embrace, Healthy Paws, and Pets Best.

AAA’s pet health insurance is administered by Embrace Pet Insurance Agency, LLC, and is underwritten by American Modern Insurance Group, Inc.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the advantages of AAA’s pet insurance?

Embrace is the best pet insurance for AAA members seeking coverage on unexpected vet expenses. Whether AAA members purchase pet insurance through Embrace or another provider, they’ll receive a member discount that can be combined with other offers. AAA is a nationwide organization, so you can likely find coverage options wherever you live.

Embrace offers the Healthy Pet Deductible, which rewards customers for not submitting claims. If lower deductibles are important to you, Embrace’s diminishing deductible system is definitely an advantage to consider. Embrace also offers a wellness add-on, which will help you save on your pet’s routine care.

How do I file a claim with AAA pet insurance?

Pay your vet directly and save all related invoices and medical records. You don’t need to include a claim form for online submissions. Claim forms are only required for submissions via email, fax, or postal mail.

Click Submit a Claim and follow the prompts to complete the process. You’ll receive an email receipt for your claim submission and can track its status in your account.

Embrace’s claims process typically takes 10-15 business days. If you’ve provided all necessary documentation, Embrace will refund you in 10 business days by mail or in three business days by direct deposit.

Does AAA Pet Insurance offer exotic pet insurance?

AAA only offers pet insurance coverage for dogs and cats. Birds and other exotic animals are not currently covered under AAA or any partner plans.

What is an Orthopedic Waiver?

Typically, Embrace’s waiting period for cruciate ligament injuries and other orthopedic incidents is six months. You can shorten that waiting period by taking your pet to an orthopedic examination. The vet will examine your pet and fill out Embrace’s Orthopedic Exam Report Card. The exam won’t be covered by your pet insurance but can be reimbursed by the Wellness Rewards add-on. To qualify, the examination must take place after your policy effective date. If Embrace approves your orthopedic waiver, the waiting period for such incidents will reduce to 14 days.

Can I use my AAA Pet Insurance plan at any vet?

Yes. Pet insurance companies don’t operate through networks, so your insurance won’t be accepted or rejected based on your vet. Pet insurance works on a reimbursement system by paying you back for expenses you’ve already covered out of pocket. In short, you can use whichever veterinary care provider works best for you and your pet. You’ll pay the vet bill and submit a claim for reimbursement. Embrace’s Wellness Rewards add-on also operates on a reimbursement system so that you can promote your pet’s preventative care from anywhere.

What are complementary treatments?

Embrace now refers to alternative therapies as complementary treatments. Complementary treatments are non-invasive therapies that heal your pet through movement, lasers, massages, and more. Alternative therapies are used to treat symptoms of critical disease, rehabilitate the body after surgery, relieve pain, and realign nerves. Embrace’s complementary treatment coverage includes chiropractic work, acupuncture, hydrotherapy, laser treatment, and physiotherapy.

Embrace covers these services under its accident/illness plan at no additional cost. Remember, Embrace only covers complementary treatments performed by a licensed veterinary professional in response to unexpected accidents and illnesses.
