Pros and Cons of AAA Pet Insurance
AAA Pet Insurance Plans and Coverage
AAA pet insurance is available through Embrace. Embrace offers customizable reimbursement, deductible and annual limit options that you can mix and match to build your ideal monthly rate. We’ve generated quotes using the provider’s most popular reimbursement and deductible rates to give you a better idea of AAA’s pet insurance costs.
AAA Pet Insurance Plan Options
Embrace doesn’t have any add-on options apart from its Wellness Rewards package. Instead, it offers a comprehensive base plan. Embrace offers reimbursement for complementary treatments, specialist care, diagnostic testing and prescription medications for any covered conditions.
Under its accident and illness plan, AAA’s pet insurance through Embrace covers:
- Accidents and illnesses
- Diagnostic testing and exam fees
- Breed-specific and hereditary conditions
- Chronic conditions
- Emergency and specialist fees
- Cancer and diagnostic treatment
- Hospitalization and surgery
- Behavioral therapy
- Alternative treatment and rehabilitation
- Prescription medications
- Preventable conditions
- Dental illnesses
According to Embrace’s website, you’ll typically pay between $35-$45 for dog insurance and $20-$25 for cat insurance. Monthly plan costs vary depending on your ZIP code and your pet’s species, breed, age and health status.
Wellness care is excluded from Embrace’s pet insurance coverage. You can purchase Embrace’s Wellness Rewards package for up to $650 in wellness reimbursements to cover routine care. This program isn’t part of your pet insurance policy but instead functions as a budgeting tool for preventative pet care. It’s the only supplemental plan available through Embrace.
Preventative Care Limits
AAA’s pet insurance through Embrace has a Wellness Rewards program for preventative care costs. The program allows you to choose between annual reimbursement rates of $250, $450 and $650 to cover routine care costs.
Instead of having dollar amount limits in place for individual services, Embrace gives you a larger yearly allowance to spend however you choose. If you select the $250 rate and spend that much on a single service, you have used your allotted yearly amount and will have to pay for other routine services out of pocket.
Embrace recommends the $650 rate for puppy and kitten owners who will inevitably spend more on initial vaccines and checkups. Pet owners with older pets who just need parasite prevention and routine vaccinations could opt for the lower plan. You can change your Wellness Rewards amount at the start of a new policy period, so you aren’t stuck with a rate that doesn’t fit your needs.
Reimbursable items under Embrace’s Wellness Rewards package include:
- Wellness exam fees
- Vaccinations
- Parasite preventatives
- Spay/neuter surgeries
- Routine fecal and blood tests
- Grooming
- Nail trimming
- Teeth cleaning
- Prescription diet food
The wellness package also offers reimbursement on items like microchipping, pet activity monitors, chiropractic work, training and more. Be sure to read your policy to understand what is covered.
Coverage Exclusions
Like all pet insurers, Embrace doesn’t cover pre-existing conditions. These are conditions your pet was symptomatic of before the onset of your pet insurance policy. Embrace does, however, only review the last year of your pet’s medical history when determining pre-existing conditions, so illnesses occurring before those 12 months may qualify for coverage. Embrace also covers curable preexisting conditions your pet hasn’t been treated for or symptomatic of in 12 months.
Embrace excludes elective cosmetic procedures from coverage, too. Cosmetic procedures, such as tail docking, ear cropping, declawing, and dewclaw removal are excluded from coverage unless deemed medically necessary by a licensed veterinarian.
Other coverage exclusions include costs resulting from or associated with:
- Breeding, whelping and pregnancy
- Injury or illness from cruelty or neglect
- Pre-existing behavioral problems
- Non-diagnostic genetic testing
- Nutritional counseling
- Pet boarding

Deductibles
Embrace offers deductible rates of $200, $300, $500, $750, $1,000. The $500 option is the most popular amongst policyholders.
If you choose the highest deductible, you’ll have lower monthly premiums but a higher amount to reach before Embrace starts covering your pet’s vet expenses.
AAA members who buy pet insurance through Embrace automatically join the Healthy Pet Deductible program. With the Healthy Pet Deductible, your annual deductible automatically goes down $50 for every year you don’t submit an insurance claim.
If you go two years with no claim reimbursement, you’ll have earned $100 in deductible credits. The $100 credit will apply to the deductible for that policy period if you do eventually have a claim. Your deductible will reset to your original limit for the next policy period.
Plan Customizations
You can choose any combination of the following yearly rates when building your Embrace pet insurance plan:
- Annual limits: $5,000, $8,000, $10,000, $15,000, $30,000
- Deductibles: $200, $300, $500, $750, $1,000
- Reimbursement rates: 70%, 80%, 90%
Different combinations will change your monthly premium cost, allowing you to choose a plan that best fits your financial and veterinary needs. If you choose a higher reimbursement rate, your payout will be larger for each claim, but you’ll pay more in monthly premiums. Embrace doesn’t offer an unlimited annual limit option, so your yearly coverage will be capped at a maximum of $30,000.
Take a look at how different plan customizations can affect your monthly premium price. Remember, prices depend on location, species, breed and age, so your pet insurance plan prices will vary. We generated these sample quotes for a 2-year-old German Shepherd in Phoenix.
Combination | Monthly Premium |
$1,000 deductible 70% reimbursement | $24.54 |
$500 deductible 80% reimbursement | $51.94 |
$200 deductible 90% reimbursement | $95.36 |

AAA Pet Insurance Reviews
Customers generally seem pleased with Embrace’s claims submission process, noting prompt reimbursement and a simple system for uploading documents. Other customers praised the individual customer service representatives for their empathetic attention to pets’ individual needs.
Some policyholders were disgruntled over yearly increases in premiums. Embrace agents responded to these negative reviews, saying that all pet insurance companies are raising prices in response to rising veterinary care costs.
“The entire process was seamless and easy. The application to upload receipts, the areas for descriptions, and the very little time it took to submit a reimbursement claim were appreciated. I would recommend Embrace for any pet parent’s needs. Well done.” – April W., Trustpilot
“Having Embrace was the best decision we could have ever made! Because of them, we can now focus on our dog healing and walking again. There were no issues or delays either. The process was simple, uncomplicated and I received a refund check within two weeks. I’ve had Embrace for many years, and I have never encountered an issue. I highly recommend them.” – M. Clark, Trustpilot
“GREAT service. Prompt response, excellent coverage. Straightforward and easy to use. With a Labrador who is very active and curious, the insurance was well worth it as she grew up. Now that she has been diagnosed with Addison’s disease at age 5, she will need meds for the rest of her life, and we are doubly glad we have Embrace.” – Elise G., Trustpilot
“I’ve been pleased with the coverage so far, but am really not a fan of how much it increases in price every single year. I’m not sure that just putting this money in a savings account wouldn’t have been a wiser way to go. I really didn’t expect such increases in price.” – Vicki M., Trustpilot
